Bamboo 'Sasa palmata'
Sasa palmata, Bambusa palmata, Arundinaria palmata
This shade-tolerant bamboo, also known as broadleaf bamboo or broad-leaved bamboo, is native to Japan. It features a low-growing height and is perfect for creating a cool, tranquil environment in your garden or yard. With its versatile nature, it can be used as a decorative plant or as a natural privacy barrier.
It's a running bamboo and in our climate I find it relatively well behaved. In damp or wet areas will be fast growing and spreading. Also great in pots.
This robust plant grows into a 2.5m high thicket of erect stems, bearing lush dark green leaves up to 40cm long. In the winter, the tips and margins turn a pale brown, creating a stunning variegated look. Low maintenance and visually striking.
With its large leaves the Sasa palmata makes a great plant to grow to create living privacy screens and dense hedges while adding an exotic touch.
In Asia, they are commonly used for wrapping food and decorating dinner plates. A versatile and valuable plant for any outdoor space.
