Indian Bean Tree

The Indian bean tree (Catalpa bignonioides) brings an exotic aura to the temperate garden. The beautiful flowers produce copious amounts of nectar for foraging bees. Vigorous growth, producing excellent rot resistant wood, make this a good specie to consider growing in stands on a large scale along with bee hives. 

Overview

  • Deciduous Tree growing to 15 m (49ft) by 10 m (32ft) at a fast rate.
  • It is in flower in June-July and the seeds ripen from October-December. 
  • The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs)The plant is self-fertile. 
  • Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. 
  • Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. 
  • It cannot grow in the shade. 
  • It prefers moist soil. 
  • It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.

Medicinal Uses

A tea made from the bark has been used as an antiseptic, antidote to snake bites, laxative, sedative and vermifuge. Note the roots are poisonous.
